okay i have a delima with a gift im buying someone for christmas. There is this little 10 year old i have been teaching chords and scales, and he is getting along okay. His main problem is that the acoustic I first got him is one of those little 2-foot first act acoustics, and while it does sound sweet, the frets on it are to small for his fingers, so i was looking to upgrade him to a big boy guitar. lol. His mother is really poor, so i decided to buy his new guitar on my own. I saw an add on tv this morning before leaving for college that showed the new Estaban Legacy guitar package, and it looked pretty cool. It solves that whole, electric, or acoustic problem that faces so many first time buyers. It also has a sweet price of 3 payments of 66$. So for 200 dollars i get an acoustic, the gigbag, strap, picks, an amp, and two dvd/books to teach the person guitar. I am really considering doing this but i would like to know if any Fenderpickers have one of these, or have played one. And what they would sugest. Thanks for the help guys.

Hey Alucard,as much as i personally dig Estaban :music-smi I think i would check out the holiday beginners packages-if theres a GC or other store near you first. Washburn,Ibanez, and Squire all have good prices on their packages around this time of year. They will be priced around the same or less, and you can put them on lawaway so you can make payments. But if you do go the Estaban Route get the package with the Signature aftershave and the autographed instuctional dvd and the glossy 8X10 for your wall.

If this isn't a joke (well the Esteban part), then what ever you do, stay as far away from anything related to Esteban as you can. His guitars will only cause the little lad frustration, and he may just end up quiting all together. Esteban is a complete fraud, and his products should not even be classified as a toy.
Best bet for a cheap acoustic or electric was stated above. If you want Acoustic, you can pick up those started Yamaha's that are not all that bad at all for the money. Or Electric wise one of those Squire Strat Pack things with the little amp. Either is 200,000,000,000,000 times better than anything Zoro is going to sell you. They are also all in the same price range.

Alucard, do a search above on Esteban on this website and read away. As Erik said, stay the hell away from them. The little guy would be better off with a shoe box and some rubber bands.
One of the best LOW priced acoustics I have played... and owned is the Jasmine dreadnought, which is the beginner from Takemine. It had a decent sound, decent fretjob, and the dang thing stayed in tune. I would have kept it, but I didn't need it at all and it did another newbie better by having it. this guitar costs $89.

You can get thos accesories pretty cheap, and find little accessory packages that have the picks, polish, tuner, strap, etc all together. Or just give him your spares!
When it comes to electric, I stand firmly behind the SquireStrat Pak. Same thing again, I've owned it, had kids buy it... and hey, even though it is a Squire, as you know from reading on this board, it can be worked on and parts are available to fix it if a problem arrises! You won't find that with the Esteban. It is $279, but a hell of alot more guitar, and ALL the extras that you need:

My other choice for an electric starter pack would be the Ibanez IJS40 Pack, which is a hair cheaper. (Keep in mind there is no shipping charge on these packs... and there probably is on the Esteban.)

I am a new Squier believer. I just ordered a Squier mini for my son and he may have a fight on his hands if he wants to try it first...I will let you know what I think.:guitar:

My little cousin has a Squire Mini, and while it is a cool guitar, I had a hell of a time keeping it in tune. UNTIL Vintage Brat suggested heavier strings. That did the trick! Evidently that shorter scale needed some more tension on those machines. Keep this in mind in case the issue arrises.

Well the Esteban never tunes correctly, right out of the box. If you want a good laugh, read the reviews on his guitars at Harmony Central, some will make you piss yourself.

Young kids also play with the tuners alot. Lat x-mas i picked out an Ibanez Starter Bass pak for a friends son and it was a great bargain-last week i was playing the bass and it still stays in tune great, it needed to be reset a little but still played good after a year, and i've played great inexpensive ibanez guitars.

I sure will. When Andy the guitar guy sets it up, I will swap for heavier strings.

Respect you for that Alucard....
People are forgetting that this kid is 10 years old, and as one who set my own nephews and daughters up over the years with guitars, they don't understand "take care of it"..they will be careful twice.....then the thing will hit anything including a sister (if he has one)...take Bytor's advice, buy that Takamine acoustic....you won't have to lay out much cash, if it breaks it's not like a $200 guitar, and it has playablity...compared to the toy he has now, he'll think he is EVH! At 10 years old anything with an amp will drive his mother crazy...it turns into a toy.

Esteban hasn't filtered his way across the Atlantic, yet... us English are a cynical mob and I would love to see him/them try! :)
Still, it's good to see Gloria's lad making a name for himself, eh? http://fenderpick.com/images/smilies/smoke.gif
