Ok, my sister had asked me to find a guitar for her son (my nephew), and he's 11, has been taking lessons for a year, he's dedicated, (plays some kick ass Neil Young...I don't know who taught him that) he plays on a cheap beater squier I found for him a year or so ago, he wants to move up, but cash is limited. He'd like a humbucker guitar (this kid knows his guitars, he's already playing tuba in the high school band (at 11), will probably end up with a music
scholarship..so he's a serious musician...also a hockey star for his age)...anyways, enough braggin about family....their cash flow is limited for Xmas (4 kids...god bless her)...and I was looking at a Washburn X12, nice guitar for the money it seems....but then I thought about the Agiles...what can you Agile guys tell me about the AL-2000, and keep in mind the limit here is about $200.00......and selfishly, this will give me a chance to try one out (you know, want to set it up for the kid and all).... :) Thanks in advance for some responses!

I played around with the 2000's during my last trip to rondo, Not a bad guitar at all, I think the main difference between the 2000,25000, 3000 ect. is the electronics. Better pickups, wiring, pots ect. as you move up the line. Much better than anything you can get from squire or epiphone for the same money.

Is there any way you can take a trip there?(no idea where you live) My friend got a 2500 goldtop w/P90's for $100 in the scratch n dent section. Nice guitar

I'm considering selling my Taylor 110 to finance my next trip there. Been gassing for a semi-hollow. :smiling s

I think this page will answer most of your questions.

http://www.rondomusic.net/alspec.html

I have the 2800 and would buy a replacement in a heartbeat if it were stolen (I sound like Harmony-Central, don't I?) They are a great value for the money, and the CNB case is a damned nice case as well. Order that if it fits in the budget... actually, it would put you over, unless you went with one of the $159 models. A few of my favorite AL-2000's.....

If I could buy one right now it would be the Tiger Eye:

If you get one, I'd like to hear your comments. Don't know anyone with the Ceramic pup models.

Wow, tough choice...at the price range I'm in, I don't like the sounds of the specs of the 2000 series. For that money, I'd still look at a Squier standard strat. Looking around ebay I can find brand new for 150.00 for a 225.00 fat strat. Not being able to pick up one of these rhondo's makes it tough to spend someone else's money, at least with the squier I know what I'm getting. I'm also looking at this;
http://images5.theimagehosting.com/x12qvsmed.jpg (http://www.theimagehosting.com)

I can pick up an "open box" for 156.00. Anyone know anything about these? The washburn site doesn't give many specs that are useful...X12QMT..the top looks pretty!

I have a bare bones X-50 Washburn--differs from the tricked out ones in that it does not have a figured wood top and Seymour Duncans. It has a set neck. I think the lower number editions have bolt on maple necks. I haven't been able to get info on what mine is made of...peope seem to feel that they are a good value for the money. I have been playing my Squier because I love how the neck feels. Gee, this is a pointless response, isn't it?

I think what the Washburns tend to have is good value for money. They are very nicely put together with good finishes and extras, like the Buzz Feitan system. I need to put the Squier away and play the Washburn. Then I will get back to you.

I've got one of these:

Absolutely gorgeous in every way, and four hundred bucks. Gibson can go to hell.

That would do it..and "grade B maple", .....and I guess you get down to the bottom, and when you see Strings: Korean ... you just get the feeling that the thing is cheapened somewhat, like the extra $2.00 their cost to put some GHS on there would lower their margin? I would prefer the Alnico pups, looks like you need to get to the 2800 before you get some real meat and potatoes.

What about the SX line?.....Jason, where do you find their specs?..unless I'm blind, they don't seem to be on their website?...the SX GG1 in black looks nice, full binding makes it looks nice.

Bytor1975
11-26-2005, 12:12 PM
I doubt that the Washburn and Squire's would stray too far from Rondo's specs as well, in that price range.

Also be aware that you can get the brand new unopened X12's for $149 as well.

The specs I have for the X12 are as follows:
Quilt maple top
Hardtail bridge
rosewood fingerboard with dot inlay
Washburn HH pups (I'll bet these are ceramic as well.)
3-way tone switch
Solid Wood Body
Bolt on maple neck
Die Case Tuners

Bytor1975

I haven't seen any SX specs. The SX's are Chinese I believe and they probably don't quote the specs.

The SX Strat copies have intriqued me... I wonder how they hold up, feel, and play?

Take a look at this one....I have found the Rhondo ebay site to be better for pics, etc., ..and I found the specs...but this is a private owner, he says "I believe this is the 2000"...well, judging by the headstock (logo and bound), do you guys think this may be a 2500 or 2800? give it a look

http://cgi.ebay.com/Agile-Les-Paul-Copy-with-old-style-headstock_W0QQitemZ7368345809QQcategoryZ2384QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

That is a tough call. That has the same headstock my 2800, and binding. Does it look like there is binding on the body to you?

It is hard to say, since they probably have changed specs over the years. If you go by today specs, I'd say it is AT LEAST 2500 because of the headstock binding.

BUT I think the key is the inlays and nut.... looks like MOP rather than pearloid, as well as a bone nut. If that is the case, I'd say 2800. It looks damned close to mine, other than the different top.

The other thing I need to consider, is that this kid is 11. So how would you guys say the neck is to get around on...I think strats and teles, with modern C shape are chunky, tough for a kid perhaps. The nut width on these are close to a squier, one I'm looking at is the Agile E1, it's listed on their Ebay site as 7.5 lbs, nicer than the LP copies at 9lbs...and shorter, 34 vs 40 inches...might be a better bet for an 11 year old...they have a quilted one on ebay;
http://images5.theimagehosting.com/e1amberquilt2a.jpg (http://www.theimagehosting.com)

I'm almost ready to pull the plug on this one, you guys are making me feel like if I don't get an Agile, I'll be banned....... :smoke:

It's been my experience that kids don't have any trouble with modern C shaped necks. Yancey was 9 here, with my old Hwy 1 that her parents bought off of me. She picked up fast, but had been playing violin since 4.

Yep... I am a cheerleader for Agile. I'll admit it, but I still think Squire Strat Paks are great deals, and I'm no stranger to Washburn acoustics or electrics either! They all make great gifts! LOL!

Ok, I bought the kid the Agile E1...........did some looking around at reviews for the axe, emailed back and forth with Kurt at Rhondo a couple times, pulled the plug.....so I figure I'll go thru the guitar and check the set-up, and get a look at one of these at my sister and brother in law's expense. Sure hope he likes it!! :smoke: ...waiting for the brown truck now for a few days

edit: why do I keep spelling rondo as rhondo...isn't that a toy company or something? :Loco:

Did you get Blue, Wine, or Amber flame?

I wonder why they just didn't call these EVH 1's? LOL! Pretty obvious what they were going after on those!

Those Agiles LPs might be too heavy for an 11-year old. I thought they were anchors. I would think the Agile Strats would be a better bet. The last few times I was there they had a huge section of scratch and dent and the guitars didn't look very scratched or dented to me. In fact, there was a 2800 LP with the most gorgeous flamed top I have ever seen in there for $145 bucks.

Those are the tickets that you see people at the grocery buying after they spend their food stamps to buy their kids bread and peanut butter, beans, maybe some milk, then some cash for a 12 pack of shitty beer, and then $30.00 for the lottery tickets. Did you know, that your chance of winning the mega lottery when buying one ticket are the same odds as getting struck by lightning three times in the same day.....truth...ofcourse, if you buy 30 tickets, then your odds are better........ :rlol:

Well, yes and no. While I do know what a Lottery is, we sure don't have one here in Alabama. They keep trying, it always gets slammed at the ballots. Not gonna happen. Hell, I live in a state that has no lottery, it is illegal to sell a vibrator, it is dry county, there for bars don't exist, and it is illegal for a store here to sell a Playboy. Oh yeah... and they just past a law making our strippers cover their tits! So now they wear pasties or paint them with latex paint. The town just south of me, which is quite a prosperous town, will not allow any movie theaters be built unless they show ALL G MOVIES!!! So that means what, four movies a year? LOL!

Life in Alabamastan....

But yes, I know the Lottery all to well. While I'm all for people blowing their money one whatever means they want (as long as it's legal), I sure don't miss standing in line for 20 minutes to buy gas while people in front of me try to pick numbers. One thing I don't miss about Ohio.

A lottery is a tax on people who are really bad at math.

...it always gets slammed at the ballots.

and that matters? In Arizona, we have statewide referrendums on ballot issues, they pass (or fail) by HUGE margins, and the Napolitano regime completely ignores the people's voice and does what they wanted to anyway.

...it is dry county, there for bars don't exist...

When I was on tour through in Georgia (late 70s) "dry county, no bars" just meant no one could serve you the alcohol. In the 'supper clubs' (bars) and Dance Halls (bars) You could BYOB, although you couldn't BYO glass. It was illegal to drink form the bottle, of course, and Joe's Dance Hall charged you 20 bucks for a 'setup' (1 glass, free refills) of soft drink/water/OJ/whatever ... or glass of ice cubes. Joe's Bar couldn't exist, but Joe's BYOB Dance Hall could, and you could conveniently buy your bottle at Joe's Liquor Store, next door - same building, same parking lot. End result - Joe made more money than he would have running a bar.

... and they just past a law making our strippers cover their tits!

Stripper laws are another interesting study. The last time I visited The area where I grew up a woman could dance naked on stage, but she couldn't strip in direct view of the patrons. The places I attended simply had one of those trifold portable screen/partition thingies on one end of the stage.

Each girl would come out in bra and panties, dance for while then go behind the screen and take off the bra. Step out, dance some more, go back behind the screen and take off the panties, then step out and dance naked.

She was not in direct view of the patrons when she took things off - BUT the entire wall behind the stage was mirrored. You could see her just by looking in the mirror. Of course, she really hammed up taking things off - for herself in the mirrors...

and that matters? In Arizona, we have statewide referrendums on ballot issues, they pass (or fail) by HUGE margins, and the Napolitano regime completely ignores the people's voice and does what they wanted to anyway. So far, they've not done that. But it seems every election cycle we have a democartic polition that will come out running as the 'Lottery' candidate who is going to save our schools. We've had them win before, but still unable to get the lottery going.

Of course, when it comes to raised taxes, and it gets voted down, they still have done it anyway. That and a few other things is probably why our current governor is on his way out this time. That and well, you see how I've described the state so far, and he is going to be up against Roy Moore, the guy that wouldn't take the 10 Commandments down from his courthouse. He is a jauggernaught in this state.

When I was on tour through in Georgia (late 70s) "dry county, no bars" just meant no one could serve you the alcohol. I think I've mentioned on here that I don't drink on here before. But I still have voted for us to become wet. I have to drive 45 minutes to go buy beer to boil my Bratwursts for gameday. We have probably the worlds only DRY Oktoberfest (which was just featured on John Stewart's The Daily Show last month). And because of the lack of alcohol sales, many restaurant chains will not come here. That sucks for me, because I like to eat. LOL! I'm tired of all these fast food joints, and other than Mexican and Chinese, the only thing we have been able to lure here has been Rubey Tuesdays (with no alcohol of course.) And yep, no beer at Pizza Hut.

This stripper thing (none of which are in my county of course! LOL!) is interesting. This just unfolded within the last few weeks, and the Sherriff's and Police are at witts end trying to figure out how to enforce this law. It seems to be an old law that the Attorney General 'dug up.' The problem is, technically it bans any nudity on the movie screen, your cable TV, magazine... basically anything you can think of that has sex or boobs that isn't going on under your covers. They just decided for some reason to start picking on the strip clubs and enforcing it there I guess, since after all, that is where ALL the 88 homocides in Birmingham have happened so far. ALL the meth is made there. And since all these rapes, murders, drug deals, and crooked politicians have been taken care of.... lets go after BOOBS!

Wait, scratch out the crooked politician part.

I received the Agile E1, Quilt amber today, the gift I got for my sister to give to her kid.....anyways....my first experience is not a good one....the pickup selector switch isn't working, I get the bridge pup only in it's own position or in the middle position, neck pup doesn't work anywhere. So that pisses me off. ALso, the back of the neck has a slight bleached out spot on it. So it's back in the box ready to ship back tomorrow. I wrote Kurt, told him the issue, then filled out their return form. You'd think someone would go thru these guitars before they send them out. This is the first time I ever had to send a guitar back. Oh well, we'll see what they do for me....

outside of that, the quited top is gorgeous! The frets would need a really good filing, the action seemed great, I played it for 10 mins, the pup (yeah, pup) sounded great. With some distortion the kid will be in heaven, the parents will call me names.

Man I hate to hear that JP! It reminds me of the situation I am in. The Taylor boards are full of guys praising their customer serivice, the guitars... and well, you know all what has happened to me with that lately.

But the same thing here, you read all that praise, you order, and you get a lemon. Damn. Hopefully it is taken care of quickly and to your approval.

My Washburn doghouse jazz box had the same exact problem with the selector switch when it came outta the box. (damn Gibson style switches)

I flipped it off.

Much furious back-and-forth action of the switch for a couple of minutes fixed it. At first, it was static-y but worked, then it all cleared up fine. I assumed it was dirt or lube ....or cat snot ... or whatever from the manufacturing.

The Agile is on it's way back, figured I'd watch Ebay for a deal, if nothing came along, I'd get the kid a different Agile. Well, I was watching a few squiers on Ebay, this one came along, its a 2004 special edition Squier Standard Strat Deluxe, FMT, the kid will have to do without a bucker...I pulled the plug on this one....this was a good deal at $150.00 plus 20.00 to ship, comes with a gator case, axe and case are 3 months old. I see new they go for about $250.00 without case. Got to keep the kid in a Fender...... :smiling s

- Alder Body
- Modern C shape neck
- Alnico single coils
- Magically awesome super cool Pearloid Pickguard

My local shop had this and the Quilt version in. I was tempted to get one, they are very nice guitars for the money. And the case with it is a plus!

Too bad the Agile didn't work out, but I sure can't complain with its replacement!

Considering the case, that is a good deal indeed!

..and they are quite nice.

Ok, this is turning into a nightmare. If the kids parents had a bigger budget, this would be alot easier. Anyways, the ebay seller above turns out to be an asshole, when I sent my paypal payment, it remained pending for the past 4 days because the idiot (who requested payment by paypal)...was, as paypal called him "unregistered"....so I email him, several times...nothing. I finally contact ebay, explain the problem, they must have contacted him, he emails me today saying "whats going on...the payment is still pending"...so I emailed him, this afternoon, expain why...still nothing from the SOB. So, I now recognize this guy as someone who is lower than whaleshit (thats about as low as you can get), and I cancel the payment....my assumption is he thought he would do better on the axe,, when he didn;t...he came up fucking dumb. I go back to Music123 for the Washburn X12QMT, they don;t have any...either does anyone else....but I find one on ebay, 169.00 including a gigbag and a tuner...brand new in box. I "buy it now", the guy calls me tonight to say he don't have one, he was supposed to get a few on Friday, but tells me they are backordered from Washburn until Jan. So, he feels bad, and offers me an upgrade for the same price. Either a Washburn X25 (three pups, two H's, one single)...basically the only difference, except the body looked terrible. The other a Dean Vendetta 1.0. I looked over the Dean site, I took it...I have a Dean acoustic Exotica, and I've been impressed with the workmanship and the sound. So I took a chance. I see the axe going anywhere from 219 - 250. So it's not a bad deal. We'll see when it get's here, a chance to mess with a Dean low end electric. I thought about Rondo again, but it seems to me you gotta go to the 250 range to get something decent, and that's out of their price range. The Dean is this one:

Dean Vandettas are cool. They are nearly the same guitar as the Ibanez SZ series and the Schecter C series. Same Korean factory. Just a few holes drilled at different places and a different headstock.

Sorry this has turned into a pain in the ass. It always does when you have a deadline! Hopefully the Dean will work out. As you know, I also have a Dean Exotica, and when I dealt with their Customer Service they treated me great! And hey, Dean has always had the BEST guitar ads! LOL!

The Dean looks a lot like the Washburn X series too.

Got the Dean today, got home from work and played it for about an hour. Nice player, nice looks...out of the box one of the best set-ups I've seen. D'ad strings, very sweet finish, everything works. Pups sound fine for low end.

If this was Harmony..."wow, buy this guitar! I looked at and played Les Pauls and Stratocasters, this one equals or beats their sound hands down! Why pay 2000.00 when you can pay 200.00 for the same sound! I had to adjust the buzz on the low E string, but other than that this guitar rips! I played this thru my Marshall Stack and I swear I sounded like Slash! And built like a tank! I threw this at my drummer when he looked at my girlfriend, it bounced off his head and high hat and wasn't even scuffed! I will buy nothing but Deans from now on!"

Reality is this...at this price range, you get what you pay for. Both the agile that I sent back and this Dean have a "cheap" feel to them. They play fine, but you know you're in the $200.00 price range. Just lots of little things you see (i.e. plastic nut, minor flaws in the rosewood fretboard), and the general feel (i.e.stiff feeling fretboard, like it needs to be broken in). I would never buy this for myself (electric in 100.00 - 200.00 range). But, for entry level, it's fine. It'll work. And it looks nice, and fully upgradeable. It seems quite a bit of the $'s go into the appeal (looks) vs the components, but...looks sell. I feel that it's a strong competitive market for guitars in the low and mid range, that in the guitars made in China, Korea, or other third world areas, they are all very similiar in what you get for your buck....I sometimes envision a large factory in China or Korea, where the guys punch the clock in the morning, head to the lunchroom for coffee before they start, and then ask each other..."so what line you assigned to today?.."oh,, I got the Ibanez line"..."oh really, I got the Squier line"......"how bout you Joe, I heard you got transfered to the Epiphone line"..."yeah, but the chicks soldering pots look better than the ones on the Samick line".....something like that.
