Here's a thread for sharing eBay auctions you have found. I would like this thread to be primarily a place for us to laugh (or shake our heads and cluck our tongues at) the fools out there.
This isnt' the place for reflectoporn, for YOUR auctons, or for cool/desireable/curious stuff. This is the place to show us an auction where the seller comes off like a complete idiot, whether through lack of product knowledge, huckster/slimeball tactics, bad spelling/typing, unreasonable expectations, etc.
Those "My GOD, what did he DO?" relic jobs we've been talking about lately would go in this thread nicely.
Please, please, please copy-n-paste as much as you can here, including pix if possible. Bring it here to us when you can. First of all, some of us are handicapped with dialups and secondly, if you paste it here it will be around a lot longer for future readers to enjoy.
If you can't post pics, OK ... but at least give us a hint. Instead of a link with just the words "Check THIS out!", please at least say something like "Click HERE to see some guy who thinks a Squier Affinity is rare and collectible!"
I'm sure THIS thread could provide us with plenty of entertainment. I hope you think so, too.
I'll start.

STRAT AND TELE NECKS
"You are looking at two brand new Electric Guitar necks that came off of a new statocastor and telecator guitars. ...The necks already has a nut installed and has the tuners still on it. ..."
The guy has 2 necks from those S101 cheapo Strat and Tele copies from 10 or 20 years ago.
My favorite part: "statocastor and telecator"

I got one.
So this week my Uncle emails me saying that his friend just bought a Strat on Ebay and wanted him to come over and check it out. My Uncle asked me for some links with Fender serial info, etc.
Supposedly it was an "old Strat, in perfect condition." He also got a hell of a deal: $20
Oh... and he had to pay $200 for shipping from a foreign country! LOL! I tell my Uncle to be sure to take his digital camera cause I gotta see this beauty! I also went ahead and told him it had to be fake. Think I was right?
So here it is... the $250 Strat!

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y40/bytor1975/Guitars/Headstock.jpg
Does anything look a little strange to you guys?
Well, the sad part is the guy that bought it just "isn't there upstairs anymore." While I haven't seen him in a decade, he was was a damned good guitarist with really nice gear. He got taken bad. I asked my Uncle of he could find out the Ebay sales link. If I get it I'll post it, as I want to see how this guy described this guitar.
Scum.

Stunning Chinese brand new electric guitar (http://cgi.ebay.com/Stunning-Chinese-brand-new-electric-guitar_W0QQitemZ7385756118QQcategoryZ621QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem)
There is so much to say here. I think this guy goes under 'bastard' instead of 'dumbass'. Cultural differences may partially explain some of the things I'll list here, but they don't excuse the deceipt.
Where to start?
The listing:
-yellow text on a white background
-copious use of Engrish: "I am a licit and sencer " ("This translation is provided as a service. eBay cannot guarantee its accuracy" ? The translator did that?? I dont' think so)
-annoying little colored javascript stars coded into the listing that follow your cursor around
-bidding starts at .99 no reserve, $360 for shipping (yes, they're Aussie $, that changes nothing.)
-seller has 89.2% good feedbacks with a grand total rating of 29
The product: (!!!!)
-a Jay Turser Delta Lady body
-generic Telecaster neck (looks pretty rough, too)
-bootleg Telecaster decal (or is it just photoshopped onto the image only?)
-non original hand-trimmed pickguard with Fender pickguard sticker
What a con man.
A Jay Turser Delta Lady isn't the worst guitar in the world. I have one, actually.... but this listing is just nasty.

Auctions like this are way too obvious. I prefer to allow Darwinism to run unimpeded when it comes to things like this. A couple of note-worthy comments he made that gave me a grin:
1."And the attention to detail even in places you wouldn't normally see is simply stunning, even the neck joint is lovingly thickly lacquered"
2."I know I only paid £129 for this guitar and I'm selling it at a higher price, this is because I think this is a very special guitar, well deserving all the attention customguitarworld lavished on it"
3."And if you want a wobbly neck, no problem customguitarworld, use special sleeker styled screws as can been seen below. The customguitarworld rapid screw can be seen at the bottom of the picture compared to one of the bothersome screws as found in a cheap squire which can take ages to screw into place" -
4.no need to worry about pressing down on the strings and playing out of tune, with this great stringing technique you out of tune in seconds." -
5."You also get special acoustic air-though vents in the trem cavity, this allows air to circulate freely from under the pickguard to keep those pick-ups cool, why more guitars don't have this innovative feature is a mystery to me."
6."And talking of the pick plate, it has a built in security feature to so that if somebody tries to remove the pick plate they have to remove the neck first."
7"isn't it great that you can have safe bridge saddles a 4mm action and fret buzz, well I guess it's all just part of the service at customguitarworld."
8."with today's improved production methods and quality control you just don't get guitars like this anymore" - Amen to that.....
9."it really breaks my heart to sell this guitar but I feel unworthy in it's presence, as it would take a really great guitarist to even attempt to play it." - I suspect even Hendrix or Django would struggle to play this piece of rubbish.
Anyway it gave me a laugh....

My favorite line..."But the incredible workmanship doesn't stop there. because this very special guitar is set-up by customguitarworld's best man you also get a special air pocket neck fitting, guaranteed to stop those troublesome long sustaining notes"................ :cracking
I noticed that the original sellers feedback (customguitarworld), when it has negative feedback, he resorts to calling the American buyers .."US Idiot".....lots of class this guy/place.

The inlay work looks almost/nearly cool. It has that definite 'Engrish' kinda so-close-but-yet-so-far.
The 12-fret inlay says "Jaguar" and there are 2 inlays of big cats on the headstock (although the head-only shot bears a facial expression that looks less like a threatening snarl and more like a toothless grin). I just can't figure out if the headstock says "Stratocaster" or "Jaguar"... or what...right there after it says "Fender".
He's still looking for over $300 shiping. 190 GBP = 331 USD.
Wow are those "race sensor" pickups? The hardware looks like its great quality...I think I feel a little sick...

Hey the Chinese dumbass who is doing the ripoffs is totally flooding eBay with guitars of all sorts, and of course the text is always in Engrish. The good news is he's not selling a damn thing.
I saw one of his listings today that made me chuckle.
Among :
Beautiful musical instrument electric guitar
New ~ Exquisite Black and white electric guitar
Beautiful white electric guitar
Beautiful whiter electric guitar (just in case the white one isn't white enough)
Brand new and stunning electricity guitar
and
Exquisite musical tool guitar (title attached to the cheapest-looking acoustic he has ever listed)
I found:
"BASS GUITAR ALL COMPLETE & WORKING"
:)
The all-caps aren't even mine! Every title above is copy-n-paste. Finally an honest listing.
I hope.

'Jever make yourself feel REAL stupid?? I get so frustrated when I spend lots of time and effort providing good information on an eBay listing, then people ask questions that I've already answered..because they didn't read. So, now it is MY turn.
I was looking at a guitar. I scanned the whole listing and didn't notice any info about shipping charges. No eBay calculator, and only that standard "See listing details"...
so I wrote to the seller and asked how much to send it to my ZIP code. When I got my reply the automated email header said:
"Re: Question about shipping for item #___ - ___ ELECTRIC GUITAR FREE SHIPPING "
that's right - this guy put the words "FREE SHIPPING", in all caps, right in the item title,

It's how crazy the vintage guitar market has gotten. You can't even so much as replace a stripped screw on a vintage guitar without signifigant devalue. Potentially angelic sounding 59' Les Pual Stardards in mint condition don't see life outside a vault/display case in a rich CEO's mansion. And if it has an orignal hang tag, WATCH OUT! Can't be touched, breathed on, looked at too long, and or even acknowlegded existing! Your microscopic flake of DNA would ruin it. Which is why relic'd instruments are a bog hit. Looks vintage, sounds vintage, feel vintage, and indeed you can fret that string and pluck that note with a finger or guitar pick without suffering a heart attack.

So, anyway, back to the chinese guy listing thing in Engrish:
"superexcellent fair-sounding electric guitar"
There are many eBay seller accounts listing this same crap, using the same kinda crappy language, with the same crappy slimeball techniques. Although the look of the listing s changes slightly from time to time, they are clearly all still the same.
I haven't decided whether they're all the same person, or many different people. Even if it is many different people, they're probably working for the same company, or at least getting their merchadise (obviously) from the same source.
I'm sure they open new user accounts every time their feedback catches up to them (to some extent... see next paragraph)
The thing I notice, though, is that regardless of the seller account name - these people aren't selling squat. I find long lists of guitars, jewelry, decorative items and more - with no bids . This says somethng positive about the eBay community. There are plenty of morons buying on eBay, but even they aren't stupid enough to patronize these asses.
Yes, these Chinese sellers charge ripoff shipping rates to recover from the loss-level starting prices, but they still aren't selling nearly enough to break even.
Unless these people are shafting eBay for listing fees, they're losing their butts. (which makes them DOUBLY qualified for the category "eBay dumbass")
Hopefully they'll give up soon.

http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-Gibson-Les-Paul-Electric-Guitar-Stunning-NR_W0QQitemZ7417920732QQcategoryZ2384QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
Now here is his first post
post #1: Someone just brought me a couple of these to set up. He got 'em for $200 ea. -- total, including shipping! Just wait 'til Gibson gets hip to this...
There's BUNCHES of 'em! They are stamped "Made in U.S.A." on the back of the headstock. Gibson style serial numbers. One of them has the "Gibson U.S.A." logo on the protective covers over the pickups... These things are over the top!
Post #2: (this is after a bunch of guys asked questions)
I haven't had the chance to plug 'em in yet, but they are in my shop to be made playable. The neck on one isn't too bad, but the other one has a distinct "woo" in the middle of the fingerboard that will require a fret leveling. The overall workmanship would fall in the "crude" category. My initial impression is, "not wonderful."
I'll report back after I've worked on 'em (Tuesday, I think).
He immediately followed with his 3rd post:
I thought about the reasonable tone of the last post for a few minutes, and decided to amend it.
These things are heinous!
I'll amend this post if I turn out to be wrong. Don't hold your breath...
His last post he hasn't been back in his shop yet, but several posts comparing these to Tokai guitars prompted his latest response:
I'm not back in the shop 'til tomorrow, but I'm going to recommend you save your money for something a little nicer. The Tokais were "Tokai" guitars, built closely enough to the pattern of the Fender & Gibson models to draw a lawsuit. These faux Gibsons & Fenders from China, while CERTAIN to draw heat from Fender & Gibson, are not built to the same quality standard, at all.
I've seen a few of the "lawsuit" Tokais. They are nice guitars. The craftsmanship was very good. The two Les Pauls in my shop are MUCH rougher in quality. One of them has a squirrely enough fingerboard that it NEEDS a fret leveling job (approx. retail value: $100, U.S.) just to be made playable. This points up the only positive attribute I can cite about these things: THEY ARE CHEAP!!!! Even after the fret file, this thing will probably have cost less than your "MIK Tokai copy of a 335."
I still don't know what they sound like, though I'm not optimistic that that I'm going to be impressed. I have seen enough, however, to be reasonably sure that these guitars won't deliver any extra value for the money spent. Two cliches suggest themselves:
1) Caveat emptor
2) You get what you pay for.
There's PLENTY of 'em on ebay and, face-to-face negotiations between our most esteemed and honorable President and their most esteemed and honorable Premier notwithstanding, the black market in Chinese produced counterfeit products is NOT going down this year -- or, probably, even next year. Rolex watch, anybody?

I think you are right, WireNWood. My Dad and some relatives from mid Alabama used to describe a really good meal as "larruping". How the Chinese would ever pick up on that word is beyond me because it is definitly an "Old South" means of decribing something. I haven't heard it since my Pop past away in '86.

Follow-up to the post I made earlier about the two "les pauls" a tech from a blues forum I visit had in his shop to set-up;
When one does one of these deals on ebay, you are buying directly from a seller in China. Why these things are not stopped at port-of-entry customs is a bit of a mystery to me, but I haven't heard of that happening. There is soooooo much stuff coming in -- and we are more worried about bombs and stuff than counterfeit watches, guitars, sunglasses, handbags, DVDs, software, you-name-it -- that it's probably not really possible to confiscate this stuff as it enters.
I am certain that, by now, both Fender and Gibson are aware of both the problem and their powerlessness to do anything about it. Who are they going to sue -- and where? At the moment, the Chinese government seems to be doing little, if anything, to stop the manufacture or traffic in counterfeits. There's not much we can do to convince them that pirate DVDs are a bad business -- and what would be the alternative? But it doesn't seem to me to be that big a problem to convince them, however, that putting Fender and Gibson logos on these guitars is bad business, but that putting the name "Noble Exemious Guitar" on them and stamping them "Made in China" probably won't hurt their sales at all. There has always been, and will always be, a market for cheap trashy guitars. The Chinese have been part of that already -- Fender has some Squiers produced there. They could call these things any non-copyrighted name they want, and they'll still sell. Maybe even more!
The final verdict on the two I've got:
They were made playable. They needed a fret leveling, one of them desperately, but after that they set-up just fine. Electronics are crappy. Ceramic mag, overwound, trashy sounding pickups and pots/switches of the variety that I call "unreliable." One has to filter this info through the information that I haven't found hardly ANY asian guitar pickups that I like. However, these ones are EASILY distinguished from "good" ones.

Personmally for me, it is the certificate of authenticity that seals the deal for me. Especially how he printed out Yuzezhubao and glued it on the piece of paper! Pretty fancy!

May 17: I am the high bidder on a Strat body on eBay. I pay via Paypal within an hour of the closing.
May 27: Ten days and no word at all from the seller. I write to them asking the status of the transaction, and includ: "If the item has not yet shipped, please just refund my money".
The seller writes back saying "the item was mailed several days ago, it should arrive anytime.
May 29: the item arrives - postmarked May 27.
The seller:
-did not ship my item in a timely manner
-did not communicate
-did not follow my instructions
-lied to me
Somebody's getting negative feedback. The merchandise? Its fine - no problem there.

I'm sorry, but I'd have a hard time paying over $40-$50 for a leather strap, whether Mr. Johnson 'signed' it (lol) or not! My main strap that I use is a suede Levy and it has been doing great for the past 11 years since I bought it for $30.
You start getting over the $50 I might as well tan a deer hide and make my own.

Well I'm all fired up now! I sent the seller a question--I asked "Signed by whom? Robert Johnson died in 1938." Then I told them they might fool some but most were laughing at their attempts to fool the public.
Then-----I reported them to eBay.
Nothing may come of it, in fact, I doubt anything will. There is too much crap on there we all know is wrong or downright fraudulent and ebay does nothing to fix it.
I did receive a reply from the seller stating what they were selling was perfectly legal and that I obvisously hadn't read the complete description and my email was inappropriate. I fired a reply back saying I had read the entire description and that my email was fine but their ad was inappropriate. So far, no second response.

I just thought of something: If a few more of us just asked the seller the simple question, "Is this really signed by Robert Johnson?" Then maybe she'll get the hint. Also, I checked her other items for sale and she has the Robert Johnson strap in brown and wine, too. Chances are, this poor woman has received some bad advice or just plain didn't think when she posted the auction the way she did.
Before I would spend $137.00 on this strap, I would spend the money on a strap from Guitstrapped. I ran across this when I received an email from the guy asking me when I served aboard the USS Power as he had served aboard her, too. Then, deducing from my email addy, I might be a musician so he sent me a link to his site. I think they are beautiful and plan on eventually getting one. Please have a look..........oh, he is in Camp Verde, Arizona. Is that in your neighborhood OWB and WnW?

I received one more email from the seller that said while she appreciated my apology, SHE DIDN'T WANT TO HEAR FROM ME ANYMORE!!!! Imagine that? Such a charming person such as myself being rebuffed that way? Oh, well, I kind of wish I hadn't reported her to eBay already, but, (sorry, I'm laughing too hard right now) the deed is done.
She did tell me that the description came directly off the package that the strap comes in. So in her way of thinking, she has done nothing wrong. And in all seriousness she's right. It's just that I think any one of us would have put a disclaimer in the ad as to the status of the "signature". I think someone sold her a bill of goods, if ya know what I mean and to charge $137.00? I use Levy's, a damn good strap, and the most I've paid is 36 or 38 dollars. This was the first (and I think last) time I've tackled anyone on eBay and while at first I thought I was doing the right thing all I've accomplished is pissing off one business woman and feeling rotten in the process. I must admit I don't feel that bad now, but earlier I felt like poop.
I am going to eventually buy a strap from Guitstrapped. For $137.00 I can get a hell of a strap............

I wouldn't worry about it at all, and whilst she may well have merely misinterpreted what the packaging said, it is her responsibility as a seller to ensure that the item is described as accurately as possible. The buyer should be wary of course, but I think they might have some comeback on an item 'signed' by a corpse.
As for eBay doing little about sales such as this, they will always argue that they merely provide a service from which to sell goods. They play no part in the sale and hold no responsibility for anything sold. You wouldn't think so considering the chunk they take from you on every sale, though

Well, our Chinese bootleggers have learned that apparently no one has been looking for a Larruping guitar. They're trying new words now (and of course, a constant string of new usernames).
"The red of the beauty electric guitar WITH TURNER"
is a JEM copy that comes complete with ...a.. turner. (tuner)
"Super stick of the red electricity guitar of the beauty"
Another Strat ripoff. SUPER stick!
"Fair-TheFair-The charming music tool electricity guitar"
well, that sounds fair to me.
This is a super-strat metalhead style axe with a kinda hockeystick headstock... the headstock says "PRS" .
My favorite so far:

New eBay dumbass, and this one is NOT a Chinese guy.
sigler_music now sets up their pages so that whever you view anyof their auction items, the page plays a midi file, like a radio ad for them.
*background music*
"Hello, Chris Moore here for Sigler Music centers, welcome to our Bay store. You need some pickups? We got 'em!..."
blah, blah, blahblahblahblahblahBLAHBLAH, FREAKIN' BLAH!
That is an assault. It is annoying as hell. When I first discovered this it was because sigler had something listed that I want - something slightly hard-to-find.
I don't care now. I don't care if he is the only sumbitch on the planet with thtes things, and he'll sell me one below wholesale. His commercial is an affront and an insult. I sent him a message telling him so.

I wonder about that, too. I can tell you that I've done business with them and I was very happy with the price and the service. In fact, they went out of their way to ship my Jimi Hendrix Pedal in a way that I requested. I wouldn't hesitate to do business with them again.

Advertising is one of my absolute all-time pet peeves, and silence is sacred. Absolutely sacred.
For any entertainment content that I am willing to spend my time on, I am also willing to spend extra MONEY to be able to enjoy that entertainment without advertising - without some smarmy syrupy-sweet voice trying to con me.
If this audio content were offering actual information about the item for sale that would be one thing - but it isn't. It is the voice of slime and huckstery.
"Hey, YOU need pickups?? Well, you've come to the rrrrrrrright place! Weeeeeee've GOT 'EM and TODAY is the VEERY BEST DAY in history to buy!..."

Surely I'm not the only one here that has gotten bogus emails supposedly from Paypal and eBay. You know the ones "Your acount has been suspended (or about to be) click here to update your information". That's the whole idea, to scare someone into giving their passwords, etc. thinking they are communicating with Paypal or eBay but instead it is identity thieves. Well I forward all this stuff to spoof@paypal and spoof@ebay . They have an automated response telling you yes, it is a bogus email and if you did give up personal info contact them and change all your passwords. Ebay calls their program for this sort of thing "Safeharbor". You get an email saying "Thanks for reporting this to Safeharbor" or something close.
So the following definitely belongs in the "DUMBASS" category: :cracking
Today I get an email from "Pearlharbor", telling me my eBay account has been suspended due to fraud and/or misuse or failure to abide by eBay rules and regulations!!! Pearlharbor? I laughed the whole time I was forwarding it! I hope someone live actually read it, that is too funny!
