You also have to think about Stevie Ray Vaughan, later in his life, he really played nothing but strats (or 2 strat) copies.

Early he played some hollow bodies etc but his big thing became the Strat!

Funny, when I think of Fender Stratocasters I always think of Buddy Holly... and I don't know why? He was way before my time. Maybe it is from seeing pictures of him and his glasses from when I was younger, and that beautiful guitar he was holding sticking out in my mind.

Yeah, Jimi's the first guy I think of when I think Strat. It would be cool to have a Hendrix thread. :)

When I think Tele, that is easy for me. I think of Keith Richards. A Strat, got to say that until a few years ago, Jimmy would have popped into my head. But it was EC who inspired me to purchase a Strat.

Erik will know exactly when EC started using a Strat. I know he did use an LP etc. in his earlier days with Creme, etc.

when I think of Strat's, its definately Clapton that comes to mind. When I think of Gibsons, its Mark Knopfler. I like Hendrix's music, but Clapton is still the best to me. There are loads of players who can play much faster than Eric, but that doesnt mean they play better. I think Clapton's the best and plays 100% from his heart. There will never be anyone who can play half as good as him, let alone batter.

EC played Gibson's from about 65 (or 66?)-70. At the time Gibson was pretty much all he was playing. His favorite, was a discontinued Les Paul (made from 52-60). I know he had several of them, I believe his were 60's. Actually, his favorite one was stolen.

In Cream he used the Les Paul, then started using the SG (the psychedelic guitar) and I believe he switched to a ES-335 towards the end of Cream. In Blind Faith he was using the Firebird, and a Tele with a Strat neck.

I believe EC switched over to Stratocasters as his main guitar/stage guitar during his stint with Derek & The Dominos. Then he used built Blackie and used it from around 72 all the way through 87 as his general stage guitar.

Going off memory, but I believe this is about right:thumbsup:

what made EC switch to the strat. I always wonder about things like that. Page did the same with the telecaster to the Les Paul. :guitarist

Most would say he fell in love with the Single Coils (over the Humbuckers)/Neck Profile and the diversity of sounds the Strat can produce.

I know some believe he switched because his playing style became less agressive, and defined (a looser feel if you will) brought on by the dirty sound of a Strat. (I've read this in a few different places, don't remember where however)

Course, nobody knows but EC himself... I'll give him a call hehe! :bannana_g

i read somewhere that part of the reason for the switch to strats was because he saw someone, want to say george harrison playing one and thought that the strat would help him make the music that he wanted to play...

all i know is that the world is a better place because of it

i mean u can't help but think that he alone really helped to keep fender on top, i mean there was srv who was unreal but i think e.c. was more mainstream... anyway just a thought

I thought EC wanted to play George Harrison's wife which is where the song Layla came from. Maybe EC wanted his strat and his lady. :coolgleam

well that to, in fact the whole album layla and assorted love songs came from that, but from what i remember reading or hearing or seeing or all three, he thought the strat was the guitar he needed for what he was trying to do.

according to claptonfaq.com (a great site) he bought brownie, a '56 in '67 and used it in the studio and on the album for layla and assorted...

he got blackie in 1970 he bought six, gave 3 away and used the other 3 to make blackie...

go to ericclaptonfaq.com they have some great stuff there ;)
