View Full Version : Yamaha acoustics (older ones?)

There is mention of Yamaha acoustics going on in a couple of threads right now. It reminded me of something...

I'd like to find out if I'm the only one who noticed this (or I should say if I'm the only one who thinks this way)...

It seems to me, at least for the Yamaha acoustics I've been exposed to in years past, that they had a distinct smell.

Here's a confession - I love to ....um.... well.....sniff soundholes.

There ya have it - I'm outta the closet.

One of the first things I do when I get my hands on a new acoustic guitar - or even an old one - is put my nose right down by the soundhole and smell the wonderful woodiness. I love that natural smell.

... and the old (maybe the new, too... dunno) Yamaha acoustics had a distinct smell-color. (like that term? it's brand new!) I do honestly believe I could put on a blindfold, smell several acoustic guitars and accurately choose the Yamaha.

Sooooooo.......anyone else willing to confess to something similar? just HOW insane do you all think I am?

Wow! You must be like a dog in heat when you walk into the acoustic room at GC........... :music-smi

I have noticed that my better hard cases seem to hold a nice aroma of "new" about them, expecially after a guitar has been in them for quite a while without opening. I have an old yamaha, I'll have to go sniff the soundhole when nobody is looking.

Sniff the soundhole eh? I dunno about that one.

As soon as I get over the flu and can smell anything, I might give a snort to my Yamaha. Call me a crowd follower. Still sounds kind of kinky though, I'll have to do it when the Wife and kids are out, I think I can get locked up for doing something like that. :rlol:

Get ahold of a Martin 000-15, or D-15, or any of they're solid Mahogany bodied guitars... you will become a sound hole sniffer!:bannana_g

well,
now you made me feel like a tit!
Just went and sniffed my Yamaha FG-150's soundhole, distinct woodie smell. Kinda musky and "old house" scent.
My Yamaha CG-110A classical really doesnt smell at all.

Man the crazy things we do.

LOL!

I'm picturing us all taking our shoes off and padding silently to where the guitar is....

looking around to make sure no one can see.....

and with an uncertain, embarassed, excited, anticipatory facial expression....

grabbing a guilty lil' whiff of that soundhole.

That's pretty amusing. I like wood smells, though... even in Home Depot's lumber department. I had never considered the innuendo until today when I started this thread and typed the words "sniffing soundholes".

And, yes I love the Acoustic guitar room in any guitar store. Not noly the smell, but the silence. It's like a chapel. It inspires reverence in me, truly it does.

oh.. and if your classical has been out of the case a lot, that would explain the scent having dissipated over time. Keeping them cased definately preserves the wonderful woody aroma.

consider this a formal request to change my subtitle to "soundhole sniffer".

I must admit. I too am a "soundhole" sniffer. (I normally only smell my own...and in private) Mahagony models smell fantastic! Both my 00-15 and J-45 have an aroma that I wish I could bottle and sell! Especially, as Just put it..."after they have been in the case for awhile."

I had a Yamaha FG-75 that I gave to my niece a few years back. I can't remember it's smell. I had it since it was new in the early 70's. And I never had it in a case. I think I developed my addiction after purchasing my 00-15 early last year.

Mystique scratches her head...thinks for a while and says, "Nope...ain't going to touch that one. Nope, not me."

Well, y'all piqued my curiosity. The Koa has a spicy smell. Cinnamon, thyme and a touch of tumeric. Weird, but not at all unpleasant.

What do you guys suggest to use when the old guitar soundhole has lost its aroma? :smoke:

Saludos.
