Anyone have a hot tip on a good but cheap acoustic bass?

I'd love to add one to my arsenal, just to jam on the couch sorta thing so brand/colour/style/or where its made means nothing.

Whats the price range I'd be looking at? Hmmmm better go check out ebay or some online dealers that work in or with Canada.

Oh well... then you want the Taylor AB series bass! Oh.. wait, you said cheap... hmmm.. Tacoma Thunderchief?

Nah, seriously, take a look at the Dean Performer Series Acoustic basses. (http://www.deanguitars.com/performer_acoustic_bass.htm) There are a few different in that line, and they won't break the bank. They don't sound anywhere near as good as the Taylor or Tacoma, but you can still buy a Roth IRA after you purchase the Dean! A pretty nice quality Korean made bass.

I have a rogue fretless i got on sale from musicians friend for $l25. I know ;"Rogue" ; this is a beautiful instrument with great action and feel. Not much projection when played acoustic but great thru a small amp. Volume and tone controls with a decent piezo. Before I bought this guitar, I went to the music store and played every acoustic in the place. This $l25 unit is as good as even the Martins. The round wound strings were very scratchy and even worse on the freted models. Flat wounds solved the noise but brought the volume down a lot so I just tweek the amp a little. If the Rogue logo bothers you like It did me: paste or tape a picture of your girlfriend on the head stock. They love it!!!

The Deans and Fenders were pretty good but still out of my price range.
This fretless prompted me to get an upright bass that I am currently trying to tame. It's well worth the effort!!

I think I'll check them both out.

I did find a Hondo bass on eBay, 129US or something like that. $155 Canadian anyway but they wanted over a hundred US to ship it to me. Ouch!

Was this Hondo newer? I didn't even know they still made guitars? I haven't seen one in a decade.
I have often wondered how those Michael Kelly basses play that they sell at Elderly (http://www.elderly.com/new_instruments/items/MKB24-AMBER.htm) stack up. They are $485, and look damned nice. I figure they must be decent because Elderly usually is much more selective in their gear than many of the other stores/catalogs.

Well, and I hope nobody that may have owned one in the past takes offense, but Hondo's used to be the cheapest of the cheap. They were beginner guitars plain and simple, and this was before the asian guitars were what they are today. I've never seen one that could stay in tune, or that I would want. But maybe they are made in some Korean plant now where some other good guitars are built and they knock your socks off... I don't know.

Maybe your right Bytor, lol.

I was kinda going over the deep end there on cheapness.

I have now thought it over and would like to buy a Geddy Lee Sig bass from Fender, and seeing that I'm a Canadian, living not far from Geddy Lee I would expect lessons from him aswell.

There. Said it.

:rlol:

Geddy better bring the beer, too.
